China’s August imports miss estimates as trade surplus expands

Sep 9, 2026

China’s imports grew 28.2% year-on-year in August 2026, missing consensus forecasts of 30% and highlighting ongoing softness in domestic consumption and investment despite accelerating from July’s 27.5% pace, according to official Customs data. In contrast, Chinese exports surged 25% year-on-year in US dollar terms, driven by strong international demand for electric vehicles, semiconductors and high-tech components. The widening divergence pushed China’s monthly trade surplus to $119.09 billion (bringing the annual cumulative surplus near $806 billion), reinforcing an export-reliant growth model that has drawn mounting criticism from Western trading partners and G20 finance ministers calling for structural trade rebalancing. With domestic economic momentum constrained by a sluggish property sector and muted consumer sentiment, international trade partners worry that unabsorbed industrial capacity could trigger heightened trade friction and protective tariffs across key export destinations, as per a report.
