Centre approves INR 3,400 crore expansion to double capacity at Indian Oil’s Ennore LNG Terminal

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has granted environmental clearance for a INR 3,400-crore expansion of Indian Oil LNG Pvt Ltd’s (IOLPL) Ennore terminal in North Chennai. The milestone approval clears the path to double the facility's liquefied natural gas (LNG) import and regasification capacity from 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10 MTPA.

Commissioned in 2019 at Kamarajar Port as the first LNG terminal on India's east coast, the facility will see its daily regasification output surge from 20 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) to 40 MMSCMD. Slated for completion in approximately 54 months, the project will drastically enhance clean energy supplies for industries, power plants, fertiliser units and city gas networks across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, according to a report.
