CBIC proposes anonymised GST audits to eliminate physical interface and discretion
Oct 8, 2026
The Central government is preparing to introduce a faceless assessment mechanism for Goods and Services Tax (GST) payers, initially targeting taxpayers administered directly under central tax jurisdictions. Modelled on the direct tax faceless assessment system, the proposed Indirect Tax audit framework will utilise dynamic allocation algorithms, automated risk-based case selection and centralised processing centres to assign audit cases to assessment units across different states. By eliminating physical interfaces between tax officers and taxpayers, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) aims to minimise administrative discretion, reduce compliance overheads, ensure uniform legal interpretations across regional jurisdictions, and expedite the resolution of tax notices and dispute proceedings, as per a report.
