B’desh closes ops at three land ports amid reduced trade with India

Sep 2, 2025

Amid reduced trade between Bangladesh and India, the former has decided to officially close three land ports due to unnecessary expenses. These include the Chilahati port in Nilphamari, Daulatganj port in Chuadanga and Tegamukh port in Rangamati. Apart from this, operations have also been suspended at the Balla land port in Habibganj.

The decision to close the ports was taken during a meeting of the advisory council held at the office of Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Muhammad Yunus. These land ports had reportedly been inactive for a long time. The decision comes months after India imposed an export ban to Bangladesh via land routes, which significantly reduced cross-border trade. Maintaining these ports requires deploying officials and incurs unnecessary expenses, causing financial strain on government resources, as per a report.
