India’s apparel exports held their ground despite significant headwinds from the United States. Readymade garment exports rose 2.4% year-on-year to a value of $12 billion during April-December 2025, according to data from the Apparel Export Promotion Council. Exports to the US declined by approximately 6% in dollar terms during the first nine months of FY2026. Increased shipments to Europe and the UAE partly offset the weakness. Indian exporters faced a combined 50% tariff — comprising 25% reciprocal and 25% penal duties — imposed between August 27, 2025 and February 7, 2026. Exporters were compelled to offer discounts of 15-18% to US retailers, compressing margins. India’s apparel exports stood at around $16 billion in FY2025, accounting for nearly 3% of global apparel trade, as per a report.
