Amazon India expands rail logistics network via Western Dedicated Freight Corridor

Amazon India has deepened its logistics collaboration with Indian Railways and DFCCIL by launching parcel operations on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Operating on the inaugural Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) train from New Dadri Railway Station, Amazon becomes the first e-commerce firm to utilise this dedicated freight line for daily parcel transit. The daily service uses over 10 van-loads of parcels to connect Amazon’s distribution nodes across Delhi, Ahmedabad and Surat, with onward links to Pune, Mumbai and Goa. Shifting shipments from road to freight rail allows the company to move 350 to 400 tonnes of cargo within 24 hours while cutting transit times nearly in half. The initiative builds on a partnership started in 2019, scaling Amazon’s rail footprint to over 140 trains across 130 intercity routes. By leveraging dedicated rail infrastructure ahead of the festive season, the company enhances network reliability, lowers transport costs and supports sustainable freight movement across India, said a report.
