His expertise in the domain can be gauged from the fact that he was elevated with new roles and responsibilities in just 18 months to his current position. His shares his vast knowledge on project execution, logistics and more in this exclusive interaction with Exim India.

* With nearly two decades in infrastructure and power sectors, how has your journey evolved across core trade segments like substations, railway electrification, and water projects?

Over the past 17 years, my professional journey has been defined by passion, persistence and purpose. I have successfully managed multi-crore infrastructure projects and driven strategic growth in sectors such as Railways, Power, Water and Airports.

* started my career in Design and Engineering before transitioning into Project Management, where I took on roles such as Project Manager, Cluster Head and Project Director. Currently, I lead the Business Development function at Tata Projects Ltd. This diverse portfolio has equipped me with the confidence to engage with senior management teams in conglomerates over the years.

With hands-on experience spanning the complete project lifecycle, my current focus on business development serves as a valuable integration for my career. This role provides me with exposure to the end-to-end business lifecycle, positioning me to reach the senior leadership level in a relatively short time frame.

You have managed diverse portfolios across public and private sectors. What are the key differences in delivering EPC projects for critical infrastructure, and how do you align teams to ensure QCDS (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety)?

Although public sector agencies have initiated the implementation of design software, advanced project management tools and techniques, mechanization, and digitization, there is an urgent need to accelerate their horizontal deployment in a fast-track mode. A few illustrative examples are provided below:

*  Shift from Cost Leadership to Product Differentiation

Contracts should prioritize value over lowest cost. Moving beyond Lowest 1 bidding models allows for:

* Improved quality and safety assurance from the outset

*  Reduced post-award variations and delays

* Encouragement of innovation in design and execution

*  Mandating Technology in the Project Lifecycle

A tech-forward ecosystem boosts both transparency and efficiency:

* Design & Planning: BIM, AI-integrated scheduling, 4D/5D modelling

* Monitoring & Execution: Primavera, Tilos, Aconex, Drones, LiDAR

* Post-Completion: Digital twins for facility management and lifecycle tracking

*Leverage India's Structural Cost Advantages

India has inherent cost efficiencies, but they must be strategically harnessed:

* Labour Arbitrage: Capitalize on skilled, affordable labour with targeted training

* Domestic Sourcing: Promote local supply chains under Make in India

Challenges to Mitigate:

* Streamlined land acquisition policies

* Digitization of statutory clearances to curb cost escalation

*Delivery Optimization

To ensure timely and cost-effective delivery:

* Standardized Engineering Templates: Modular templates for recurring infrastructure

*  Prefab & Pre-Engineering Technologies: Faster build times with quality control

* Value Engineering: Mandated inclusion during DPR stage to drive design efficiency

* Prolonged Execution: Improve the efficiency of resource utilization—both manpower and machinery—with a targeted focus on adhering to the scheduled project completion timelines.

* Workforce Upskilling

Quality execution demands skilled execution:

*   On-site vocational programs

*  Partnerships with IITs, NITs, Skill India and private institutes for certified training

*  Continuous learning modules on latest tech tools

 In your view, how is digital transformation reshaping traditional project execution in the infrastructure domain?

The evolution brought about by digital transformations has significantly altered traditional project execution in the following ways:

* Ensured predictable project delivery.

*Timely risk assessment helps in mitigating potential issues.

* Achieved loss avoidance and reduced cost overruns.

*  Aligned design and engineering with procurement and project delivery.

* Minimized overhead costs, both direct and indirect.

* Decreased supply chain management costs, inventory holding costs and sunk costs.

*Improved pricing variations and aligned material delivery accordingly.

* Enhanced cash flow, profitability before tax (PBT) and EBITDA margins.

* Provided real-time project dashboard updates for senior management.

Having driven profitability-focused programs like ‘Project Eagle’ and worked with global consultants like McKinsey, what strategic levers do you consider most impactful for sustained growth in emerging business lines?

*Optimization in Design & Engineering Without Compromising Quality

*Supply Chain Analytics and Intelligence

* Backward and forward integration

*Long-term volume contracts with major suppliers

*  Expanding the vendor base for identified raw materials

* Purchasing ex-works and utilizing our own trucks to reduce dead freight and plan deliveries to multiple locations

* Implementing process management in manufacturing plants (steel & copper)

 * Designing experiments to simulate the best scenarios for reducing conversion costs

 *  Developing an inventory plan for high value and long lead items and establishing protocols for bulk purchasing

*  Identifying long lead items in relation to short lead items for a Just-In-Time (JIT) approach

*  Execution Efficiency and Overheads

* Prioritizing execution with a billing schedule to generate positive cash flow

* Establishing pre-bid partnerships with subcontractors

*  Implementing cost-efficient infrastructure

*  Utilizing alternative construction materials (e.g., using fly ash instead of river sand, and concrete hollow blocks instead of red bricks)

* Emphasizing mechanization and machinery to reduce labour dependency while achieving high-quality standards

 *  Adopting a cluster-based approach to create synergies in manpower, machinery and overheads (e.g., storage, vehicles, accommodation)

* Enhancing execution efficiency and optimizing the utilization of manpower and machinery

* Creating a lean and flat organizational structure to minimize multiple layers of hierarchy

*A one-time correct approach to avoid repetitive resource deployment

* Planning for completion ahead of schedule to qualify for early completion bonuses in contracts if applicable

*  Utilizing electric vehicles, solar power and recycling water for construction activities.

In today's rapidly evolving global landscape, how important is adaptability in business development, and how do you personally stay ahead of market trends and disruptions?

Adaptability in business development is crucial because of:

*  Globalisation of business

* Nature of business is changing rapidly – From firm BOQ based contract to EPC turnkey, PPP, Hybrid Annuity Model, Tariff based competitive bidding, EPC+F, Cost plus model

*  Evolving new business: From conventional thermal power plant to renewable green energy like wind, solar, hydro, BESS, green hydrogen, nuclear energy

The strategy to be ahead of market trends and disruption are:

*  Product differentiation

* Cost leadership

The strategies mentioned above provide the organization with a long-term, sustainable competitive advantage.

Many experts say global trade and infra investment are shifting. Which continent, in your experience, is quietly emerging as a promising hub for infrastructure development and trade expansion?

The following continents represent emerging and promising hubs for infrastructure development and trade expansion:

*  Africa - Various countries and organizations, including China, UAE,and international financial institutions, are actively collaborating with African nations to promote infrastructure development and trade growth.

*   Middle East – Local financial institutions and government support play a significant role in fostering infrastructure and trade initiatives in the region.

 What is your message to the next generation aspiring to build a career in logistics and infrastructure project management?

* As we all know, logistics and infrastructure are undergoing a revolutionary transformation driven by emerging trends, technological advancements, and an expanding range of career opportunities.

*  Now, India, Africa and Gulf are focusing on infrastructure development. In the 8th Budget, the GoI has demonstrated its commitment to infrastructure with an allocation of INR 11.21 lakh crore, building on the previous year's INR 11.11 lakh crore.

*A wealth of opportunities are available in various infrastructure sectors, such as building, aviation, power generation, transmission & distribution, transportation, semiconductors, renewables, water and wastewater management, defence and manufacturing through the Make in India initiative, among others. The industry eagerly seeks out bright, young and dynamic talents, ready to make a significant impact!

Therefore, as I conclude, let me mention three guiding thoughts:

First,

* Embrace Technology and sustainability which are the major driving force of our growth in the future. I will emphasize both technology & sustainability have to walk hand in hand, which is the crux of success for all of us.

Technology will accelerate possibilities, while sustainability will ensure that your growth is enduring and responsible. Together, they represent the compass for a better tomorrow.

Second,

It is also important to empower and uplift a skilled workforce and bring them to the mainstream by providing them exposure to the world of digital transformation, which has magnanimous potential.

And finally,

The future belongs to the youth. The younger generation brings fresh ideas, unshakeable energy and a willingness to disrupt the old ways of thinking. We must nurture them, and equip them to balance tradition with transformation, culture with innovation, and legacy with sustainability. They are not just participants in the future - they are its architects.

*  Together, let us create an India where the wisdom of tradition, and the promise of innovation come together to challenge the status quo. Let us move forward with confidence to create a future where India's gems illuminate the world with their brilliance.
